If you would like to be notified when dates for the 2019 course are available, please email education@stchristophers.org.uk

The management course for StRs and SAS doctors in palliative medicine has been running since 2003, and we have now trained over 250 doctors from the United Kingdom and Ireland. It is currently the only comprehensive palliative medicine specific management course in the UK. Feedback from attendees is overwhelmingly positive, and most who come do so because of recommendations from previous course members. The maximum number of participants for any courses is 24 to optimise learning.

  • What will I learn?

You will build effective management knowledge, skills and abilities and enhance your practical management skills. The course content is designed to address most of the relevant specialty training curriculum requirements.

(It may be of help to know that we do not duplicate the content of advanced communication skills courses, nor the mandatory recruitment and selection processes and information governance training that has to be obtained elsewhere.)

  • Course tutors

Dr Louise Gibbs, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, St Christopher’s Hospice
Louise Gibbs has been a part-time consultant at St Christopher’s since March 1999. She trained initially in general medicine and then did specialist training in palliative medicine in South West Thames. Louise worked with Drs Jennifer Todd and Debra Swann in 2002/3 to resurrect the ‘old’ St Christopher’s management course for registrars she had found so useful in her training, creating this new course. She is the Caldicott Guardian and information governance lead at St Christopher’s.

Dr Jennifer Todd, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Kingston Hospital NHS Trust / Princess Alice Hospice
Jennifer Todd is currently working in her second consultant post based at Princess Alice Hospice in Esher and Kingston Hospital. Prior to this, she worked as a part-time consultant in palliative medicine at Trinity Hospice for 6 years, having completed her specialist training on the South Thames Training Scheme. Her own experience of limited management training as an SpR and experience of the transition from SpR to consultant, led her to jointly developing this course. Her main areas of interest are teaching and training, research, professional development and ethics.

  • What will the course look like?

The course consists of a mixture of lecture and workshop teaching styles, covering topics such as:

Leadership and management of individuals and teams

    • Understanding self and others
    • Working with others
    • Leadership
    • People management
    • Time management and personal effectiveness

    Managing the organisation

More about St Christopher's education

St Christopher’s Education Centre and VAT charges

At St Christopher's, a registered charity, it is important for us to maximise any surpluses to reinvest in the objectives of the charity.

Unfortunately, the manner in which we undertake our training currently means we are not able to invest as much of our surplus as possible, therefore from the 1 December 2017, St Christopher’s Education Centre will charge VAT at the standard rate on our training courses, the reason for this change in pricing is twofold:

i) We want to be able to reinvest any surpluses made from training back into all of our charitable objectives rather than only Education

ii) We want to be able to reclaim the VAT on costs relating to developing and running the training courses
