St Christopher’s annual review 2010/11

"You took care of us as if we were your immediate family. We trusted you and looked forward to seeing you even though the news was not good. Thank you for helping and guiding us and the thousands of others you care for."

"Your staff are not only professional but human..."

"Thank you for the kindness and care that you gave our Mother on her last day. Thank you for making sure she was clean and comfortable, that she felt safe. Thank you for the guidance that you gave and reassurance you provided us with, by doing the things we could not."

Jean Chappell with Lorna in the physio gym

“I think it's wonderful. I feel pleased with myself when I have been in the gym. I didn't think I would walk upstairs again.

"It's nice to be amongst other people who have similar problems. It's nice to feel you are not alone. You can feel quite isolated. This week is the first time in four months I've been out by myself.

"The class has given me confidence which energises me. I always thought that people who go to the gym weren't like me. I see this place, St Christopher's Hospice, as a place of hope."

St Christopher's Hospice Annual Review 2008/09

“ ... they [St Christopher’s] have resisted the temptation to sit on their laurels as the pre-eminent hospice but instead they are pushing out the boundaries and seeking the real challenges of improving care for everyone nearing the end of their lives, focusing particularly now on those living and dying in care homes.”
Professor Keri Thomas, National Clinical Lead for the Gold Standards Framework Centre

“ The education of our staff has really improved and they are able to talk comfortably about death and dying so they can really get to the heart of what the residents and families want.”
Caron Sanders- Crook, Manager, Westwood House Care Home which is enrolled in Gold Standards Framework training

“ ... the work at St Christopher’s provided a good example of partnership working where skills were being utilised across settings, thereby avoiding the need for patients to be transferred between institutions.”

St Christopher's Hospice Annual Review 2007/08

“I wanted to express my thanks for the amazing support and nursing care staff from St Christopher’s gave my 18 year-old nephew at his home. At such a difficult time for the family, the nurses and support staff were amazing. They were all so kind and caring and made sure that Ben was comfortable, pain free and surrounded by his family during the last few days of his life. Your staff do the most amazing jobs and should be proud of the big difference they make to people’s lives. I am not sure how the family could have coped without your support.”

“Thank you so much for the wonderful loving care of my father who died peacefully on Nuffield Ward. Thank you for the time, kindness and understanding given to all my family. You allowed ‘Pop’ to die pain free and comfortable.”

“Everything possible was done for her. She died with dignity. All the staff were hardworking, caring and sensitive to both the patient and relatives’ needs. I promised my sister that she would not die in pain and with the help of St Christopher’s I kept that promise.”
