McKinley Syringe Pump Workshop

Useful information

About the event

Syringe pumps are regularly used in symptom management, particularly at the end of life. Staff must have training before using them to ensure patient safety (Mukoreka and Sisay, 2015).

We can provide this bespoke training here at St Christopher’s or at a local venue that would be more convenient for you. If you would like more information or to discuss potential dates, please contact the Education Team at who will be happy to help.

  • What will I learn?

On completion of this workshop you will be able to:

    • describe the uses of syringe pumps in symptom management
    • discuss their use with patients/families
    • understand the medications commonly used, in a pump, at the end of life
    • set up a McKinley T34 pump
    • monitor a pump during delivery of medications
    • troubleshoot problems.

Note This workshop delivers theoretical training only. Delegates will need to be observed/assessed in their workplace by someone able to assess competency in that environment.

  • Who is it for?

The workshop is for qualified nurses/doctors who need to know how to use/understand syringe pumps.

  • Facilitators

The sessions will be facilitated by St Christopher’s Education and clinical staff.

More about St Christopher's education

St Christopher’s Education Centre and VAT charges

At St Christopher's, a registered charity, it is important for us to maximise any surpluses to reinvest in the objectives of the charity.

Unfortunately, the manner in which we undertake our training currently means we are not able to invest as much of our surplus as possible, therefore from the 1 December 2017, St Christopher’s Education Centre will charge VAT at the standard rate on our training courses, the reason for this change in pricing is twofold:

i) We want to be able to reinvest any surpluses made from training back into all of our charitable objectives rather than only Education

ii) We want to be able to reclaim the VAT on costs relating to developing and running the training courses
