Donna Burden, and her friends and family will be taking part in St Christopher’s Fun Walk on 14 May this year and walking in memory of her Dad, who was cared for by the hospice in 2015. The Fun Walk starts and finishes at Keston Common in Kent and is a feel-good day out in lovely countryside to raise funds for St Christopher’s, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
By joining Donna, 49, and her friends on their walk, you will be supporting local families like the Burden’s. Donna, from West Wickham, who walked the last Fun Walk with twenty friends to thank the hospice for caring for her father, explains why everyone should get involved.
“We were all anxious about going into a hospice but immediately the level of care and attention from doctors and nurses made my Dad feel safe and that relieved us. We experienced St Christopher’s as a really positive place and they treated his pain as a priority…Even at the end, when Dad couldn’t walk, they would take the bed out into the garden so that he could feel the sun on his face. There was compassion and dignity at all times.
“We’ll be taking part in the Fun Walk again this year and hope you’ll join us. The route actually takes us past Dad’s old house and, obviously that was sad the last time we did the walk, but then we looked up and saw this huge stream of people passing by, laughing, happy, inspired people, all wanting to do their bit for the hospice and knew he would be so proud. With something so joyful, why wouldn’t you join in?”
Joint Chief Executive, Shaun O’Leary, comments, “Over 3,000 amazing walkers joined our last Fun Walk, but we’re really keen to top this figure in this, our 50th anniversary year, and would love to see you on 14 May at Keston Common!”
Keston Common will be buzzing with live music, games for children, a dog obstacle course, and fresh food and drink to fuel walkers and supporters. There will be awards for the best fancy dress costumes and the most money raised.
There is a choice of 3, 5, 8 or 11 mile sponsored walks with entertainment stops along the way. Keen walkers can set-off from Keston Common from 8.30am, with the last recommended set-off time advised for 12pm for the eleven mile walk. Dogs are also very welcome!
To cover the costs of the event, entry will be £5 for adults but under 11’s can join in for free (under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult or guardian). The start and finish of the event is at Keston Common, Keston, Kent, BR2 6BP.
