Transport and St Christopher’s Anniversary Centre
The Anniversary Centre
In 2009 we opened a beautiful new centre for the benefit of patients and families. As well as a large social space with a care and information centre, we have a rehabilitation gym, bathing suites and a hairdressing salon. We have also created 12 new consultation rooms where members of our nursing, medical, social work and welfare and complementary therapy teams will be able to see you for a planned appointment.
After you have been referred to our home care services, one of our St Christopher’s nurses will contact you to arrange to visit you at home for an assessment. For future appointments she (or he) may invite you and any important family members to come and see your nurse in one of our consultation rooms in the Anniversary Centre. If at any stage you find you are unable to make the journey here we will visit you at home again. Your home care nurse will discuss with you the best location for your appointment.
When you visit us you will also be able to find out about a wide range of other activities run from the Centre. For example, we run groups on managing fatigue and breathlessness, pilates, circuit training, relaxation, managing your finances and creative arts.
Our transport resources are limited so we do ask that, if possible, you make your own way to St Christopher’s. We are well served by public transport. However, we appreciate that this is not possible for everyone receiving our care, so other options are:
Providing your own transport
If you are able to make your own arrangements to get here, then you may find it useful to know that there are drop off facilities immediately in front of the main entrance. We keep wheelchairs at reception and staff can help you into the building. There is free parking on site and unrestricted parking in the roads around St Christopher’s. If someone brings you to your appointment, they are welcome to stay and enjoy our café and the rest of the Centre.
Most of our patients are entitled to a Taxi Card as part of the London Taxi Card scheme. This offers subsidised travel via the black taxi service. The scheme will give you a greatly reduced fare for regular planned journeys to St Christopher’s. Your St Christopher’s nurse can give you more information about the scheme that operates in your borough.
However, we recognise that under this scheme patients who live farthest away have to pay more for their journey, so we have decided to cap the cost of the Taxi Card fares for those patients unable to pay the complete fare.
For any return fare costing more than £5 (after the deduction of the Taxi Card subsidy) St Christopher’s will refund the difference on production of a receipt. Please give your receipt to the Anniversary Centre Coordinator, who will reimburse you.
Note This service is only for patients coming to the Anniversary Centre using a black taxi under the Taxi Card scheme.
If you are not able to make your own way to St Christopher’s we have a minibus which can bring you into the Centre. The minibus can accommodate a small number of wheelchairs. Other patients will be collected during the journey and therefore we will not be able to give you an exact pickup time. We would ask that you please make a small contribution of £1 towards each journey taken on the minibus (i.e. £2 for the return journey).
Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel minibus transport. This will help us run an efficient service. To cancel transport please contact 020 8768 4500. This number is available 24 hours a day.
If you would like to use the St Christopher’s minibus to get to and from your hospice appointment, please speak to your nurse or relevant professional who will book the journey for you.
For people on means-tested benefits, even a small contribution towards transport costs can mean the loss of a significant part of their weekly income. For this reason we can help with transport costs if you are unable to make a contribution and are in receipt of at least one of the following:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Guarantee Pension Credit
- Council Tax Benefit or
- Housing Benefit.
If you would like to apply for help with transport costs, please complete the form on the left and enclose original documentary evidence of the benefit, allowance or credit you receive (this can be photocopied at St Christopher’s).
