Legacy Awareness Month, March 2018

Learn more about how you can leave a legacy that will last a lifetime with a gift to St Christopher’s in your Will

“The whole process was really straightforward and I would definitely recommend St Christopher’s Will Week, especially as you know you’re supporting the hospice!”

Derek Byrne, volunteer

Legacies – also known as gifts in Wills – are enormously important to St Christopher’s.

Last year over 23% of our work was made possible through legacies, thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters remembering us in their Wills.

We really do rely on these gifts not only to care for patients now, but to plan for the future.

Any gift, big or small, will make a huge difference to the lives of people across south east London both now and in the future. No matter the shape or size of your legacy, you can be sure that it will be enormously appreciated.

We understand that you will have a number of considerations when making a Will.

That’s why, throughout St Christopher’s Legacy Awareness Month, we would like to offer you the opportunity to learn more about St Christopher’s and end of life planning in an informal setting with no obligation or pressure to leave a legacy to us.

Derek’s story

Volunteer Derek ByrneDerek Byrne (pictured) has volunteered at St Christopher’s Penge shop for over six years, and updated his Will through our Will Week initiative in March 2017, after seeing a poster in the staff room.

He made a Will a few years back, but decided it was a good time to update it.

Derek, who lives in Penge, comments, “It’s easy to think you haven’t got much, but it’s surprising how things change – especially if you have property because house prices have gone up so much. That’s why I decided to update my Will.

“The solicitors were so friendly and really made the whole experience personal, taking the time to get to know me and learn about my situation. The whole process was really straightforward and I would definitely recommend St Christopher’s Will Week, especially as you know you’re supporting the hospice!

“I’ve also included a gift to St Christopher’s in my Will, as I think they do amazing work in the local area and I really enjoy volunteering in the shop.”

About St Christopher’s

At St Christopher’s Hospice our vision is of a world in which all dying people and those close to them have access to care and support, whenever and wherever they need it.

Each person is unique and we tailor our care to meet social, emotional and spiritual needs, as well as manage physical symptoms. Our goal is to help people live well until they die and support those affected by the loss of a loved one. Every year we provide care and support to over 6,500 people across south east London, both at home and in the hospice.

We passionately believe that everyone should have access to the best care at the end of their lives and have an extensive education programme, working with people across the world, to improve and develop hospice care.

We were founded in 1967 by Dame Cicely Saunders and, over 50 years later, her words still remain at the heart of everything we do:

“You matter because you are you and you matter until the last moment of your life.”

As a registered charity we need to raise £15 million every year to continue to care for people when it matters most.

Without the support of our local communities this wouldn’t be possible.

Thank you from us all for your support.
