Exhibitions at St Christopher's Hospice
Our aim is to put St Christopher’s on the map both as a viable art gallery and performance venue, through offering relevant high quality artistic and musical events. We also aim to change attitudes towards death and dying and the work that we do on a day to day basis through engaging with the general public in a more creative and dynamic way. Feedback from those who attend is overwhelmingly positive…

Michele Angelo Petrone founded the MAP Foundation, a registered charity, in 2002 to help people give expression to their emotional landscape while living with cancer. Michele transformed his own cancer experience through artistic expression. His exhibition and book - 'The Emotional Cancer Journey' - a series of paintings and words depicts his journey through illness. This artwork in conjunction with residencies and workshops has been influential in helping people recognise their own feelings, and come to terms with the complex and painful issues relating to serious illness and dying.
He was a professional artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy and the South Bank in London. His work is included in the BP Young Europeans Collection in Brussels and in public and private collections across the world. He received a Medal of Distinction from The Glogow Museum in Poland. In 2004 he won the Blair Sadler Award from the Society for the Arts in Healthcare in Washington DC, USA, for his ground-breaking work with people affected by cancer.
Commenting on The Emotional Cancer Journey, Professor Mike Richards, National Cancer Director, said: "Michele Angelo Petrone's paintings of his cancer journey give a clear insight into the uncertainty, isolation and pain experienced by people with cancer. They also show the importance of the support and care which is given to cancer patients".
Michele died in 2007.

Duration: October - December 2011
Location: St Christopher's Hospice
Howards Wilson was a patient under the care of St Christopher’s. He had Motor Neurone Disease and died in June 2011.
Howard and his family were inspired by another MND patient, who before his skills as an artist were reduced by the disease, painted portraits of his family and friends. Howard’s family commissioned family, friends and professional artists to create portraits of Howard as a tribute to his positive, infectious spirit. Howard viewed the first exhibition of the works created in his daughter’s home. An article written about the exhibition in the MND magazine ‘Thumbprint’ has had an enormous response throughout the country. In conjunction with Howard’s family and the MND Association, we are exhibiting the portraits here at St Christopher’s Hospice.
The exhibition will be launched by a piano recital given by the Czech pianist Jana Frenklova as part of the Dame Cicely Saunders Concert Series on Thursday 6 October between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. The work will remain at the hospice until December 2011. In order to reserve a ticket for the launch, please contact the Anniversary Centre Co-ordinator on 020 8768 4747

Photography exhibition ‘A patient’s Perspective’
Opening: Thursday 8 September
Duration: September - December 2011
Location: The Anniversary Centre at St Christopher's Hospice
Please come and see a new exhibition in our Anniversary Centre meeting room at St Christopher's Hospice. The exhibition runs from 8 September 2011 until the end of the year. The photographs will be displayed throughout this time.
Drew Leavy was a patient under the care of St Christopher's Hospice. Drew described St Christopher's as a sanctuary, a place that gave him extra time and extra joy. He said that he felt more alive than at any other time in his life when he was here..
Drew planned the exhibition himself before he died in July of this year. He wanted the exhibition to give a unique perspective from the viewpoint of a patient using the services of St Christopher’s.
The series of images are a small selection of photographs taken by Drew during his time as both an inpatient and outpatient at the hospice. The photographs show a range of staff, patients and activities including doctors and nurses, food and cakes and collage-making.
If you are not able to come to the opening and would like to see the exhibition please contact the Anniversary Centre Co-ordinator on 0208 768 4747 to arrange a convenient time to visit.
