Fundraiser Story: Gareth ‘Gazza’ Forge

Gareth Forge and his friends have got everyone jiving their way to raising over £4,000 for St Christopher’s

Gareth Forge and his friends have got everyone jiving their way to raising over £4,000 for St Christopher’s in memory of their friend, Jan Smith, who was a patient here in 2014.

Gareth, known in the dancing world as Gazza, has been organising modern jive dances in Bromley and Orpington for more than 17 years, raising money for a number of charities through raffles.

His friend Jan was there from the start, helping him to run the events, known as Gazzabash Dances. They started as an annual event and proved to be so popular that they are now twice a month!

“The aim is for people to have fun whilst raising money. I get enjoyment from people enjoying themselves,” Gareth tells us.

“You don’t have to be able to dance and we get everyone from 16-80 coming along.”

The dance organiser has many fond memories of Jan:

“Jan was a warm person who had a lot of friends. At a party she’d be the person you’d hear laughing.”

When asked if he was proud of how much money he’d raised for the hospice, he replies:

“I’m just the collection tin. It’s everyone else that’s contributed. I’m just glad everyone’s enjoying themselves and the money is going to something worthwhile.”
