Patient Story: Jackie Lewington
St Christopher’s patient, Jackie Lewington, and her mother Jean Smith, have come together to form a dream team in making and selling knitted Easter bunnies and chicks to raise money for our hospice
Jean knits the Easter treats when she comes to see her daughter at the hospice. Jackie then sells them on to visitors and staff.
“When she first came here, she wouldn’t let anyone out of the door without buying one!” Jean tells us.
So far Jean has knitted a phenomenal 300 bunnies and chicks, with 300 Creme Eggs bought to go within them!
Jackie has had plenty of visitors to sell the goodies on to. The pair are well known in the local area having run a florist, Jackie’s Flower Studio, in Sydenham for 30 years.
“We used to deliver flowers here,” Jean says “When we both became ill we had to give it up. We miss the customers; they became our friends. But they have been coming in to see Jackie.”
“It’s been excellent here. Jackie wanted to come here and said on her first day that she feels safe here. Everyone’s been so lovely, there’s not one person we can say we don’t like.”
Jean says she enjoys knitting during her visits: “I want to be here and knitting is a good way to use the time.”
The knitted bunnies and chicks are available to buy in the Anniversary Centre and the reception at St Christopher’s Sydenham and in the reception of Caritas House, Orpington, for £1.50.
