    Are you qualified in one or more Complementary therapy disciplines?

    Why we need your help

    You will play a huge part in helping us to achieve our vision, in which all dying people and those close to them have access to care and support, whenever and wherever they need it.

    What time should you offer?

    As little or as much time as you like, weekdays between 9am-5pm

    What activities will you be involved in as part of this volunteer role?

    • Working in accordance with St Christopher’s Complementary Therapies Policy and in accordance with relevant professional body, code of conduct
    • Liaise regularly with the Complementary Therapies (CT) Team structuring workload appropriately
    • Accept referrals from the Complementary Therapies Team
    • Deliver safe treatments to patients, carers and family members in accordance with the Treatment Plans
    • To work independently and as part of a multi-professional team
    • Recognise and report any significant concerns, changes and deterioration in the patient’s condition
    • Keep accurate records for patients and carers, as agreed with the Complementary Therapies Lead, including significant interactions
    • Be responsible for the safe use and storage of essential and carrier oils, acupuncture needles and equipment and all other relevant materials used during treatments
    • Maintain confidentiality in line with the hospice Confidentiality policy
    • Attend morning daily meetings when appropriate

    In one of our buildings:

    • St Christopher’s Hospice, 51-59 Lawrie Park Road, Sydenham, London, SE26 6DZ
    • Caritas House, Tregony Road, Orpington, Kent, BR6 9XA

    Or community based in one of the five boroughs we cover.

    Training and support provided

    • Volunteer training 24 hours over a number of days and weeks
    • Complementary therapies in house training and updates
    • Three times a year supervision sessions with the St Christopher’s volunteers team
    • Participate in clinical supervisions with the Complementary Therapies team – once every six weeks

    What we are looking for


    • Compassionate listener and clear communicator
    • Emotional resilience in the face of the difficult circumstances that can affect people at end of life
    • Be able to recognise personal limitations of knowledge and skills and refer to colleagues within the team
    • Ability to respect others’ differences and choices
    • Ability to follow our policies and procedures to keep you, patients, families and staff safe
    • Ability to represent St Christopher’s and our values positivity
    • Willingness to learn, adapt and embrace change when needed
    • Someone who can work independently and as part of a multi-professional team


    • Hold a recognised qualification in one or more Complementary therapy disciplines – with appropriate insurance
    • Be a member of a register recognised by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA)
    • CPD requirements; in accordance with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) guidelines

    Anything else you need to know

    • You will be invited to attend an interview with the Complementary Therapies Lead
    • The volunteer role will be agreed with you following successful completion of DBS checks, references, Patient Support volunteer training and Complementary Therapies in-house training
    • Shadowing the complementary therapies team and being shadowed is required as part of the in-house training
    • There is a short settling in period to see if the role is right for you
    • You must be 18 years old or over to do these roles
