Founded in 1967 by Dame Cicely Saunders, the driving force behind the modern hospice movement, St Christopher’s today not only provides care and support to over 6000 people a year across the London boroughs of Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth, Croydon and Bromley, but also has a national and international reputation as a centre for training and research in end of life care.
Our Trustee Team has a vital role in overseeing the work of St Christopher’s. We are looking to recruit new members to join our Board of Trustees in 2018 and 2019 to fill vacancies created by retiring Board members. We are looking for individuals who will bring the enthusiasm, experience and commitment we need to help guide St Christopher’s through the next phase of its development.
About the role
The primary responsibility of the Trustees is to provide the organisation with strategic leadership and maintain a governance perspective to ensure it is well managed, administered and resourced.
Normally the term of office for each elected Trustee is three years, serving a maximum of three consecutive terms. Trustees are expected to attend and actively contribute to the quarterly Board meetings, attend the AGM and the annual Board Away Day (all meetings take place during the working day); Trustees are also expected to sit on at least one Board sub-committee or subsidiary board, and to attend some profile and fund-raising events.
We are also looking to appoint new Board Members for St Christopher’s Personal Care Service and St Christopher’s Trading Company (you don’t have to become a member of St Christopher’s Trustee Board to support these areas). We are particularly interested in recruiting people who can bring particular expertise in Health and Social Care Leadership, Innovation and entrepreneurship, Retail Management, Experience of scaling small businesses, relevant commercial experience or marketing. If you are a strategic thinker, with the capacity to attend up to four Board meetings per annum (including one extended meeting to agree strategic objectives) and you are looking for a way to make a genuine contribution to our organisation, we would like to learn more about you and very much hope you will join us at one of our scheduled Information evenings (see below for further details).
Trustees are expected to act with integrity, openness, diplomacy, tact and inclusiveness.
The Board are looking for Trustees with a diverse, varied and balanced cross section of life skills and experience, including lived experience, to aid and support good decision making at Board level. We are particularly looking for people with skills and expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- retail and sales
- business and commerciality
- community based services
- experience of working in large and complex organisations
- decision making at board level
The role of a Trustee of St Christopher’s is voluntary and Trustees will not receive any remuneration for their services on the Board.
Out of pocket expenses incurred by the Trustees in the course of carrying out the role will be reimbursed in accordance with the organisation’s expenses policy.
