St Christopher’s Open Garden Festival, where supporters kindly open their gardens to the public to raise money for their local hospice, now has a new award winning garden on its programme.
87 Footscray Road, Eltham is opening this year in memory of Dave Ayling. The front and back gardens have been lovingly maintained over 17 years by the current owner who proudly scooped two first prizes in the “Greenwich in Bloom” awards last year for “Best Window Boxes and Hanging Baskets” and “Best Front Landscape Design”.
The front garden is a sea of colour with multi-level window boxes and planters with a small seating area. The back garden which is accessed by a side alleyway adjacent to the house is a peaceful and tranquil haven with an abundance of wildlife loving plants including a beautiful display of lupins and foxgloves.
There is much interest in this small garden, flowerbeds teaming with colour, winding pathways surrounded by herbaceous borders, shrubs, statues and grasses. Mature trees add a level of seclusion and shade in this oasis of calm, a perfect spot to enjoy the light refreshments on offer.
We have some fantastic gardens opening this year, however we are always looking to ‘grow’ our garden numbers. Do you have a garden – large or small – that you would like to proudly showcase for a day from May to September? Maybe get your friends, family and neighbours involved? It doesn’t have to be just tea and cake as many of our gardens even feature BBQs or music. Everything that our participants do in the festival raises vital funds for your local hospice – and we’ll help and support you every step of the way.
