We’re delighted to be launching the third of a trio of new initiatives to support palliative care nurses. Palliative Discovery is an online community tailored specifically to the educational, wellbeing and career needs of this critical part of the workforce and we hope all Clinical Nurse Specialists sign up and encourage colleagues to log on too.

During 2020 we identified, celebrated and connected a network of 30 Pioneering Nurses. These individuals, drawn from across the world, as far afield as Bhutan, China and Mexico, are all trailblazers in their field, extending the provision of end of life care to all corners of the globe.

Then at the start of 2021 we launched The Lantern Model, the first new model of palliative and end of life care nursing for 30 years, to help reconnect nurses with what is valuable in caring for people at the end of life.

We’re now really excited to announce the third major development – Palliative Discovery. Working in partnership with Central and North-West London NHS Foundation Trust and University College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the National Nurse Consultant Group (Palliative Care) and thanks to funding from the Burdett Trust, we’re creating an online community platform that’s initially free to join for all CNSs working in palliative and end of life care. The aim is to support them to continue to meet the upcoming challenges and fulfil the key role they’ve played in palliative care for many years.

With Palliative Discovery, our shared aim is to give CNSs working in palliative care in any setting, a virtual place where they can grow their expertise, develop their leadership skills, build resilience, and inspire the next generation of senior nurses.

Palliative Discovery will provide this multi-functional, virtual space that’s not only for CNSs but will be shaped by them too, so that it becomes a thriving community that reflects and meets their needs and becomes a place they can call their own.

There are three types of learning offer, all delivered live online and then available to download and watch later. The first of these is roundtable events. These provide an opportunity for in-depth assessment and consideration of complex end of life and palliative care topics. The second learning offer is webinars, videos and podcasts. Examples of the topics to be covered in these 12-60 minute sessions are; identification and classification of complex pain states in palliative care and working with people who are neuro-diverse. Workshops to help CNSs build a sustainable and healthy career are the third strand of learning offered by Palliative Discovery. Building resilience and honing leadership skills will form the focus for these workshops.

The Lantern Model, will be at the heart of Palliative Discovery, supporting and shaping attributes such as compassion, courage, confidence, self-awareness and generosity.

As well as being a place to access formal learning materials, live, recorded and written, Palliative Discovery will serve as a vibrant hub offering access to expert supervision, coaching and career advice, which many nurses struggle to access. The platform will bring CNSs together both online, in their own time, and in-person as well, notably with an annual conference.

We would highly recommend CNSs get involved from the start and encourage colleagues working in the same role to do the same so you can start to shape not just your career and practice but that of the next generation of CNSs too and the future of palliative and end of life care.

Become a part of this new community now.
