About the event

This half day workshop is for those who work directly with young people aged 11-18 and who wish to learn more about their needs in facing bereavement. We will be looking at how young people grieve, different approaches and skills in supporting them, and difficult issues such as sudden death.

    • Exploring how grief and adolescence combine
    • Direct work with young people
    • Managing our own feelings
    • Young people in the family
    • How young people can be supported during the serious illness of someone close to them.

    Jo Sharp, Candle Child Bereavement Service Worker, St Christopher’s Hospice
    Jo is a fully qualified BACP registered counsellor who has worked extensively with children in both primary and secondary schools within south London and Croydon. She also has a background in Family Support and holds a certificate in Parent/Child Therapy. Jo joined the Candle team in September 2015 and offers bereavement support to children and young people and their families, in the South East of London.

    Jenny Baulkwill, Candle Child Bereavement Worker, St Christopher’s Hospice
    Jenny trained as a social worker at the University of Manchester. After seven years of practice in mental health, she moved into palliative care in the 1990s. She worked for four years at St Christopher’s as a social worker on the wards and in the community. Since 1998 Jenny has been working with bereaved children, young people and their families at the Candle project based at St Christopher’s.

St Christopher’s Education Centre and VAT charges

At St Christopher's, a registered charity, it is important for us to maximise any surpluses to reinvest in the objectives of the charity.

Unfortunately, the manner in which we undertake our training currently means we are not able to invest as much of our surplus as possible, therefore from the 1 December 2017, St Christopher’s Education Centre will charge VAT at the standard rate on our training courses, the reason for this change in pricing is twofold:

i) We want to be able to reinvest any surpluses made from training back into all of our charitable objectives rather than only Education

ii) We want to be able to reclaim the VAT on costs relating to developing and running the training courses
