Dr Georgios Kaltsakas, MD, PhD, FRCP
Georgios Kaltsakas holds a substantive consultant post in the Lane Fox Respiratory Service at St Thomas’ Hospital, London and an honorary Senior Lecturer contract with King’s College London. Lane Fox Service is the largest weaning, rehabilitation and home ventilation centre in Europe delivering respiratory support to over 2200 patients with chronic respiratory failure.
Georgios Kaltsakas co-leads the respiratory Motor Neurone Disease service in the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and represents the service in meetings with the MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association). He has spoken at National and International congresses on the care of patients with neuromuscular disease including Motor Neurone Disease and the development of the Lane Fox service.
Georgios Kaltsakas has conducted his PhD on respiratory mechanics and respiratory muscle function in end stage liver disease. He has been awarded an European Respiratory Society (ERS) Research fellowship and a Hellenic Thoracic Society (HTS) Fellowship, which enabled him to continue his research work on the area of non-invasive ventilation and neuromuscular disease, working with the London respiratory muscle group. He presented his research work at several international meetings and has been awarded travel grants from the ERS. He has published primary research data on respiratory physiology, exercise physiology, and pulmonary rehabilitation in leading respiratory journals. He has written chapters in books in the area of respiratory physiology, weaning, and ventilation.
Georgios Kaltsakas has been chairing sessions in the International ERS congress since 2017. He has been invited to lecture on respiratory clinical physiology and non-invasive ventilation at international level. He has regular teaching slots both in King’s College London and University of Athens. He is an ERS HERMES (Harmonised Education in Respiratory Medicine for European Specialists) mentor and had taught in ERS courses in Pulmonary Rehabilitation and in Interventional Bronchoscopy.
Georgios is an Associate Editor for both Thorax and Breathe, reviewer for EBAP (European Board for Accreditation in Pneumology), reviewer for grant applications for ERS (ERS College of Experts), and reviewer in leading respiratory journals.
Georgios is the secretary of the Group 01.01 – Clinical Problems of the European Respiratory Society.
