Sarah Russell
Dr Sarah Russell is a Nurse Consultant and Trust Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, Visiting Clinical Reader, University of Surrey, Non-Executive Director, End of Life Integrator Social Finance, Florence Nightingale Foundation Alumni.
Sarah is a Registered General Nurse and is Nurse Consultant and Trust Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust. She has over 30 years’ experience in local, regional, and national hospice, palliative and end of life care roles. Sarah’s first Clinical Nurse Specialist role was in the 1990’s at St Christopher’s Hospice. More recent roles include Head of Research and Clinical Innovation at Hospice UK, Director of Education and Research at the Hospice of St Francis and Peace Hospice Care in Hertfordshire, ABC End of Life Education Lead for Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Luton, and Practice Development Facilitator at Dementia UK. Sarah was a family carer for 17 years her mother who lived with dementia. She remains interested and curious about dementia and end of life care. In the past she has been awarded ‘Educationalist of the Year’ from the International Journal of Palliative Nursing and ‘Workforce Team of the Year’ from the Nursing Times.
In 2016, Sarah was awarded her Professional Doctorate in Health Care Research for her research on Advance Care Planning. This remains her most important clinical and research interest and she has published widely on this subject including being a co-author on The Lancet Commission: The Value of Death.
