“At a party with friends I plucked up courage, and spoke to the beautiful girl with the dark eyes, olive skin and jet-black hair. Her smile dazzled me like the sun coming out, as she replied: yes, she was from Cyprus and her name was Maria.

Two children, two grandchildren, and more than four decades later she told me with passion, “If only you knew how much I love you!” I knew deep-down, and could have said the same to her.

I was blessed to be given the chance to show her, as her carer for the last three years of her life, with the huge assistance of St Christopher’s Hospice providing community care, enabling her to spend her last days in her own home and bed.”
