Book Club

Join us for our book club, which runs on the second Tuesday of every month at St Christopher’s Hospice Anniversary Centre! The sessions are free to join, and will begin at 6pm and finish at 7.30pm. We talk through the book choice for the month, delving into your thoughts, feelings and questions.

These will be regular social book club evenings where we discuss, debate and explore a monthly book selected by our group, from fiction, to poetry, memoir and more! We will be uncovering new treasures and reacquainting ourselves with old favourites, delving into books that explore death, dying and loss in ways that may be by turns familiar, unexpected and thought-provoking.

Book of the month – July: 1984 by George Orwell

A masterpiece of rebellion and imprisonment, where war is peace, freedom is slavery and Big Brother is watching. Thought Police, Big Brother, Orwellian – these words have entered our vocabulary because of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel 1984.

The story of one man’s nightmare odyssey as he pursues a forbidden love affair through a world ruled by warring states and a power structure that controls not only information but also individual thought and memory, 1984 is a prophetic haunting tale, more relevant than ever before.

What will the book club meetings involve?

Chatting, a chance to meet new people and to explore a book!

We look forward to seeing you there!

The sessions will place onsite in St Christopher’s CARE, St Christopher’s Hospice 51-59 Lawrie Park Road, Sydenham London, SE26 6DZ.

Healthy Walks

All are welcome to join this friendly, welcoming group which meets every Thursday, for a healthy walk in Crystal Palace Park.

The walks set off at 1.30pm from the St Christopher’s CARE front entrance. We walk for just under an hour, through the beautiful park, enjoying the changing of seasons. Walking routes are tailored to the energies and abilities of all participants.

Everyone is welcome to take part – volunteers, staff, friends, service users, relatives, local residents, and the walks are free

Please wear comfortable footwear, and clothing appropriate for the weather.

Toilets are available at the start and finish of the walk, and after the walk we usually stay on for a cuppa in the Anniversary Centre.

You can take part whether or not you have walked with us before, and there is no need to book. You will need to register with Lewisham Healthy Walks, which you can do online or by completing a form when you arrive for your first walk. Register online here.

For more information, please email or call 07834802355. Or just turn up on a Thursday lunchtime!
