Closing Date:                          11th September 2022

St Christopher’s have an exciting opportunity for a passionate, enthusiastic and skilled person to co-ordinate our Candle Child Bereavement Service. Established in 1999, Candle was a pioneering bereavement service supporting children, young people and their parents/carers across five London boroughs; Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham. You will build on the excellent work of Candle and, with others, develop the service for the future. This is a crucial role within our adult and children’s bereavement services.

The Candle Child Bereavement service offers:

  • One-to-one and group counselling for any child or young person in Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham or Southwark experiencing loss through death
  • Specialist training, advice and consultancy services to schools and other organisations working with children facing bereavement
  • An advice service for parents and professional carers.
  • A weekly Drop-in for parents and carers.

Leading a small dedicated team, you will work with children and young people up to the age of 18. Referrals to the team are made by external professionals, family members and by self-referral (from age 16).

You will need to:

  • Bring your expertise of working with bereaved children and young people as well as a significant knowledge of available resources.
  • Be creative and resilient; building strong relationships in leadership of the team, and with external referrers in our catchment area.
  • Have a demonstrable proven track record of working collaboratively and under your own initiative.
  • Experience of delivering training and education is essential. Previous involvement in teaching at graduate and postgraduate level is desirable.

The post includes line management of four team members who each work part time across the week. The team comprises two counsellors, a Play Therapist and an Art Therapist. You will hold a caseload as well as manage the team and Candle Service day-to-day.

Collaborative working with colleagues across the organisation is an important aspect of the role; including the inpatient unit, Community Nursing Teams, Psychosocial teams and Community Action Team. The post holder has the responsibility, with others to ensure that the needs of children and young people approaching bereavement and into bereavement are recognised and supported. This can extend to offering advice and information to parents and adult carers for children facing bereavement.
